Coaches are crucual in sports. One of the main reasons is because many times, players “in the game” are too close to the game to see what needs to be tweaked or changed. For you and me, it’s really no different in our personal and professional lives.
Have you ever had a coach who really pushed you hard? Maybe you resented him or her at first but looking back you can see that maybe they were onto something. Typically when we think of a coach, we think sports; football or basketball. But in the business world the idea of coaching is a bit different. A better analogy might be the role of a batting or pitching coach in baseball. While in football and basketball the coach usually oversees the big picture and at times designs and directs specific plays, a baseball batting or pitching coach closely watches a player and in the long run helps them discover and then hone their skills to get better. There is alot more observing, discovery, maybe suggesting and self realization for the ballplayer. It’s amazing that even athletes who’ve reached the top of the name still work with a coach because none of us are ever too far along to not benefit from growth.
It’s much the same in business coaching. I’ve witnesses firsthand that sudden burst of realization that opens up new ideas and possibilities. I know in the one on one coaching I’ve offered, the results have been nothing but positive. And it’s not me, it’s just knowing the right questions to ask, the subtle suggestions or thoughts that cause those being coached to come to a realization. Many times, it’s something they knew already. They just needed a reminder. Other times its a spark that causes them to look at things from a different angle, a new perspective. And when the light bulb goes off, its so rewarding.
Here is what one person who worked one on one with me had to say about the benefits of coaching.
"Coaching with Jeff felt like a leadership therapy session specifically designed to boost confidence as a leader and provide tools to become a more effective leader. I always left feeling like I had a toolbox to deal with the week's challenges."
"I would encourage anyone to pursue coaching with Jeff. Not only were the sessions productive, but Jeff offered podcast and book recommendations outside of the sessions so that the leadership lessons continued outside of sessions.” - Sheila
